Youth Theatre
Rockingham Theatre Company started two dedicated Youth Theatre programmes (two age groups, 7-11 and 12-17) in February 2025 which have proved very popular with both groups being well subscribed. The development of young talent and members for the Theatre is absolutely crucial for the continuation of the Theatre into the future and is one of the main aims of the Theatre’s Strategic Plan.
The younger group meets at the Theatre on Monday afternoons between 4.30pm to 6pm. A team of dedicated volunteers, led by Linda Lockwood, Sue Walker and Emily Van Rooyen take the children through a series of activities designed to teach them stage craft, movement, characterisation and above all, have fun.
The older cohort meets at the Theatre on Wednesdays between 6pm to 7.30pm. Led by Mat Fisher, Honor Steinbeck and Marnie Williams, this group are also learning theatre skills and arts but at a higher level to reflect their age, abilities and considerable talents.
At the end of Term 1 both groups presented a series of short plays for their families which were very well received.
Our programs are designed to encourage creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, agility, curiosity, confidence, and emotional intelligence. Each experience aims to be both educational and entertaining, ensuring that children engage with new ideas, develop their skills, and prepare for future activities.
All volunteers involved with our Youth Theatre program hold current Working with Children cards.
We aim to make participation in our Youth Theatre programs accessible by all and affordable for our children’s families. We value and respect children and young people recognising that diversity enriches our community and welcome children and young people regardless of their abilities, sex, gender or social economic or cultural background.
